Elderly Couple Killed in High Speed Crash in Mesa

MESA, AZ — A 21-year-old man, identified as Gezane Izrael Cabanillas-Lape, is facing charges of allegedly speeding down Main Street in Mesa and causing a deadly crash.

The accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22nd.  Emergency crews arrived on scene to find the passenger of the minivan, 82-year-old Ronald Hettich, unconscious.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver of the minivan, Irma Hettich, 80, and driver of the minivan, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.  She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

The driver of the car that hit the minivan, Gezane Izrael, did not sustain any serious injuries.  The passenger in the vehicle, a 21-year-old woman, was transported to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery for internal bleeding.

Preliminary reports show that the Hettichs were heading north on Windsor and turning onto Main Street, when Gezane Izrael plowed into their minivan at a speed over 100 mph.  The speed limit on the road is 45 mph.  Further details state that the minivan hit the curb, a tree, a street sign, and a large metal gate.  The minivan then spun 180 degrees before coming to a stop about 60 yards from the initial collision.

Gezane Izrael did not display any signs of alcohol or drug impairment.  The car’s high speed was determined to be the main cause of the crash.  Gezane was detained and booked into a Mesa City Holding Facility on suspicion of two counts of second-degree murder and one count aggravated assault.  No further details available and investigation is ongoing.
